The Casual Home 5-Shelf Ladder Bookcase is a simple and attractive bookshelf that adds a delightful point of interest to a room while displaying books and other decorative items. The shelf is easy to assemble, has a nice sturdy feel to it, and has "steps" that are wide enough to hold many items. I was able to assemble the shelf by myself within an hour - it probably would've taken less time had I not been on the phone chatting - and once assembled, it looks simple but beautiful. I love how the wood feels sturdy and is evenly stained with no blemishes, dents, or dings in the wood, and how durable to shelf feels. It is free-standing, so it's not necessary to lean up against the wall, and it comes with straps to attract it to a wall to avoid tippage or the chance of it falling over, which is great for people who live in earthquake country as I do. The color is as rich and pretty as it is in the stock photo and each shelf is durable enough to hold a good number of decor pieces and books. Overall, it's a great shelf to consider if you are looking for a non-boxy-looking shelf to fill a small space.

I love this shelf, I bought it with the corner shelf too. It's exactly what I wanted, self supporting, nice looking, holds enough books and pictures, etc that I bought it for and looks great in my living room! Would recommend.

Easy assembly but requires a gentle approach to getting the screws in to keep them straight. Also, made the mistake of using a drill for the back plate which connects the top and bottom so it resulted in a small crack. The wood is soft and dents easily so I'm giving this a 4 out of 5. Also, the white looks more like a stain as you can see the grain of the wood which isn't bad but it could use a second coat of paint. The screws are exposed so I covered them with white vinyl stickers purchased from Amazon.

I bought ten of these for all my books (lots and lots of books). I was hesitant given that some reviews complained about assembly and sturdiness. Overall, I think (after putting 10 together and having them for several weeks now, with all my books on them) that they are worth buying. The assembly is a little tricky the first time but the key is to use a different hex wrench than the one they provide. The main reason: theirs is made of cheap metal, and after using it on several bolts, the hex wrench begins to wear a bit and the edge of the hex dulls, making it possible to strip the hex bolt. So, I used my own hex wrench (which is made of stainless steel), and the problem was resolved.I did not use the brackets they come with to attach the cases to the wall. Instead, the relatively sturdiness of the case along with five rows of books (i.e., a lot of weight) makes them stay put. And I don't have kids who will climb them. If you have toddlers, or if you are only putting frames or vases on these, you may want to use the wall clips to ensure they don't get pulled down accidentally by a kid climbing or pulling on them.

Bought this shelf for my office and it fit perfectly in the space I needed. Good quality but I HATE having to use an allen wrench to put it together with. Unfortunately, that's the norm these days when you buy anything that has to be assembled.

I purchased and returned several shelves such as these before landing on the Casual Home shelves. These were some of the only shelves that I found that are actually made of wood (like real, solid wood), instead of particleboard wrapped in laminate. The shelves were very easy to put together. My critical feedback is that you can see some of the tiny nail holes in the front of the shelf (they should have tacked it from the back) but the chances are good most people won't notice unless they're looking specifically for the tiny pin-sized holes. Additionally, I considered giving it another spray with white paint as the finish is fairly thin. Lastly, the top only connects in one place with a mechanical fastener. this allows to the top to be pulled off of the bottom. So I applied wood glue to secure the top to the bottom. Despite these three criticisms, I'm still giving this a 5 star review because this is the best of the shelves that I have found that isn't total junk.
