Practic and useful
I've been reading this book on my own and so far I must say it is a useful tool for those who need guidance in UX or those who want to improve their design skills in HCI.

good
This book is kind of hard to read, but it was very useful for the course I was taking. Contains a lot of information that I needed to pass the course.

Basically Useless
I bought this book for a class, and I think it's basically useless. Any time I think I'm going to learn something concrete, I get referred to an outside source. A textbook is supposed to get that outside work and summarize it for me. Telling me that design recommendations exist and telling me the sources rather than providing a recap of those examples is the opposite of what I want in a textbook. What good is a textbook if all it does is tell me where else to look for the useful information? Also, there is an entire chapter that basically just describes what different interfaces are. I don't need to read three pages about what a mobile device is and how people use them. I'd rather read about the advantages and disadvantages of designing for those types of interfaces. Similarly with examples of different ways of low-fidelity prototyping, why not tell me how using index card can be useful rather than just telling me what it is?I also failed to be convinced that most of what they talk about in the book is driven by scientific research. Maybe that was not the authors' goal, but as a research scientist, I like to know that various techniques have scientific grounding.I also agree with the other reviewers who said it is unnecessarily wordy. This book could have been at least a hundred pages shorter and still conveyed the same information it currently conveys.

Good, but lofty
I took a user centered design course that was very good. However, the information and citations in this book just seemed lofty. I've read other reviews of this text and think they do a pretty good job in their criticisms. I did learn a lot, especially about Gestalt and design principles, but getting through the exhaustive citations was...well, it was exhaustive is what it was. It seemed like every other line was a recitation from research. I get it, it's good to show students how to properly cite your work and make sure the argumentation has a solid base in research, but good Lord it was hard to get through. If you have to get this text for a class, rent it as mine is now collecting dust on my bookshelf.

Got it on time for class
I got the book just in time for class. I do wish there was a digital one though. The material covered in the book was updated enough to show examples on an iPad with iBooks versus Kindle.

Overly wordy and lacks solid examples and clear context
I had particularly high hopes for this book, hoping it would have more insight toward design for web and computer applications. I was disappointed to find that the overall content is long winded and leans more toward theory rather than practical and usable examples for web and computer application design. The book as a whole I feel, fails to accurately and quickly make new ideas known to the reader. This is evident by a lack of real world examples or even citing instances where a certain concept was used. The author instead bombards you with long descriptions and fragmented ideas. I got the distinct impression that the authors were almost avoiding or dancing around certain ideas. What was more alarming was in chapter 2, the author notes that she does not subscribe to any social media and was looking over others shoulders during a environmental crisis at a conference. She then proceeds to talk about social media and it's makeup but it would appear that she had no real first hand experience with it which to me lacked credibility. The purchase was not a total loss as I did learn a new method to approaching new projects from reading this book. I also gained a deeper insight on designing around the problem space, which again is a lofty term that could use more explanation in easier to understand terminology. It should be noted that many of the terms and topics discussed within are garrulous, ie: rambling, and there is a considerable lack of understandable examples to help the reader see how topics could be applied in the real world.Unless this is absolutely required reading for a college course, I would steer clear of it unfortunately.
