The Return Of A Hero
From The Classic Western Movie Of The Same Name Shane Launched The Hero To TV Viewers. we Don't have Alan Ladd from The movie Though David Carradine in his first ever Television series handles The role of The lone gun slinger ready To help out unexpecting Homesteaders with confident and ease. from The classic opening credits capturing The original movies main Theme The series breaks The mould from The Traditional TV western by conveying warmth Throughout it's main cast members. The lovely Jill Ireland had graced many classic sixties TV shows guest starring in The likes of Star Trek and The Man From U.N.C.L.E but she never was really featured in a TV series of her own That is until Shane came along. here Ireland plays The lonely widower woman with her son Taking comfort That The lone stranger Shane offers a helping hand helping her build a home. The series faithfully manages To capture for Television The early settlers of The west if you have ever seen The Movie How The West Was Won you will know exactly what I mean. filled with many familiar faces of The era The series while Truly memorable and staying faithful To The classic movies roots however was short lived and only 14 episodes were produced for whatever reason it should have ran a whole lot longer. spread over Three Disc's picture and sound are really excellent The collection should find a home in any classic TV western fans collection and proof That you can Take a classic movie and find The same success on The small screen. comes Highly recommended from one cowpoke To another.

David Carradine has more hair and wears boots!
Amazing series, I took a bit of a gamble buying this as I'd never seen it, but the reviews and the fact that its Carradine swung it for me, Its a bit like Bonanza and other western shows, but I like it and its nice to see Carradine with hair and wearing shoes. A classic old series I'm glad I added to my collection.

Shane, Shane, I love you, Shane.
Watching the series again takes me back to when I saw it and loved it on TV all those years ago! It still looks great and has stood the test of time. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who's not sure about buying it.

Excellent series...... well worth watching.
Having never seen or even heard of this series, I was pleasantly surprised to see a young DAVID CARRADINE play an excellent part of SHANE, who it appears has taken on the responsibility of protecting the Starrett homestead from cattleman Ruf Ryker (played by BERT FREED) after Marianne Starrett, (played by a young JILL IRELAND) lost her husband Joe. Over the course of the seventeen episodes Shane's past as a gunfighter catches up with him when various "villains" appear to even the score.Based on the 1949 novel by Jack Schaefer and inspired by the award-winning 1953 film starring ALAN LADD, this series aired in 1966.

This is one of the best TV Westerns ever
SHANE was one of the progressive TV shows that showcased the '60s social renaissance that emerged during the Vietnam War era and the counter-culture youth movement in opposition to the war.Everything about the show is first-rate. The scripts, the acting, the camerawork, the sets, the direction, even the music. The stories have depth, power and a freshness that most TV Western lack, with few of the tired clichés that plague most Westerns. It had a remarkably authentic quality for TV, and it manages to capture the special quality of the original classic 1953 hit movie, SHANE starring Alan Ladd. Here you see a very young David Carradine, and why he became a major figure during the 1960s and '70s. He plays an old-fashioned, unselfish heroic protagonist, with a wonderful blend of quiet strength, fortitude--and danger--yet at the same time displaying a depth of character, gentleness and wisdom of a much older man. Though he is young, he is a man with a dark past that haunts him. But his moral strength and integrity lead him to stand up to power and protect the innocent, oppressed, and defenseless. The other actors are perfectly cast, with a beautifully talented Jill Ireland as the female lead, the great Tom Tully as her father and Chris Shea as Joey, the boy who idolizes Shane. Many supporting character actors flesh out the show and give it a sense of authenticity.Shane was a very popular show among young people in the '60. Jim Morrison of the Doors once said it was the only TV show he ever watched. So naturally, it was just too good--and too relevant--to compete with the other superficial trash on TV. I saw reruns of it as a kid, but they were butchered to squeeze in more commercials. This DVD set from Timeless Media not only restores the full-length programs but also looks fabulous. The transfers are very clean and the color is richly preserved.I was very pleasantly surprised by this series. I recommend it to anyone who might enjoy a great Western series with way more to offer than most TV shows.

Still Excellent after 50 Years
I hadn't read the novel or seen the movie, Shane. So, when I watched the TV series, Shane, as a teenager in 1966, I appreciated it for its own merits, of which there were many. After recently purchasing and watching the DVD of the series and after not seeing it in 50 years, I was reminded of just how special the series was with excellent acting and well-written stories containing action, humor, and romance.David Carradine played Shane, the gunfighter who tried to overcome his past by working for and protecting the Starrett family--Marian, a widow (Jill Ireland), her son, Joey, (Christopher Shea--the voice of Linus in the Peanuts movies), and Tom Starrett, Marian's father-in-law (Tom Tully). The family were homesteaders in Wyoming in the late 1800s at odds with the local cattleman, Ruf Ryker (Bert Freed), who was determined to drive them and the other "nesters" out of "his" valley. It was obvious that Shane was more than a hired hand. He cared deeply for the family to the point of being a father figure for Joey and quietly loving Marian. In one episode, High Road to Viator, when Shane risks his life to retrieve Marian's dress from a thief, Marian stated that it was just a dress. To which Tom replied, "...it's not just a dress, any more than Shane is just a hired man." Unfortunately, Shane's past continued to haunt him, especially when he was in competition with Marian's other suitors. He felt he had nothing to offer her and Joey, and there was always the possibility of "some yahoo riding into town to put me in a pine box."This quality western was up against tough competition when it aired, and was cancelled after 17 episodes. I'm glad these episodes have been resurrected on DVD so people who missed its original TV showing or a new generation of fans get a chance to appreciate an intelligent, classy western that died too soon.
