Highest quality matcha green tea with additives
I hadn't heard of matcha until I saw it a recent TV programme on whether so-called 'superfoods' were worth buying. The overall verdict was no (because the same benefits can be obtained from ordinary foods), but matcha did get positive lab results because it is high in anti-oxidants (the black tea found in regular teabags got good results too, but to a lesser extent). Therefore I was pleased to give this flavoured matcha tea product a try.“Great taste" is the USP of Bloom matcha teas, with each variety having different additives to enhance the flavour; three of the varieties won Great Taste Awards in 2014. I’ve tried several different Bloom matcha teas. I am a bit dubious about the somewhat mysterious additives to this otherwise highest quality (organic Japanese ceremonial grade matcha) health supplement (see below). On drinking the product, there have been different responses in the family ranging from “stewed black tea” to “the best tea I’ve ever tasted!”, with the overall impression being positive.=== VARIETIES ===* BRAIN BOOST - There's no noticeable additional aroma or taste to this variety, which tastes to me like the most delicate green tea. Contains 15% acai berry and 10% ginkgo biloba* MOJITO - There’s a fresh aroma of peppermint that floats up from the bowl (or cup) as you whisk the tea and, on tasting, there’s just a subtle hint of peppermint with a barely perceptible hint of lime. Contains 20% peppermint and 10% lime flavouring.* SUNRISE - This tea was awarded one star in the 2014 Great Taste Awards and is my favourite morning drink. There’s a lovely aroma of grapefruit, but only a slight hint of grapefruit flavour when drinking the subtle green tea. Contains 10% grapefruit flavouring.* SUPERCHARGE - This tea was awarded two stars in the 2014 Great Taste Awards and tastes to me like the most delicate green tea with no flavouring added. Contains 10% maca root and 5% guarana.* TROPICAL - This was my least favourite, because the aroma reminded me of fruit Chewitt sweets - in other words, a chemical fruit flavour rather than anything natural or healthy. Contains 10% mango flavouring.=== THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT ===* Whisking the tea up in a bowl to creat the froth makes drinking it seem fun and special, a step up from a regular cuppa* If you've tried green tea before and found the taste too strong, this top quality matcha may well win you over* The tea looks a gorgeous green colour, especially with the froth on top!* Contains about the same amount of caffeine as an ordinary cup of tea (30mg), if you want a little caffeine boost (a regular cup of coffee typically contains 70-75mg of caffeine) and apparently matcha tea is supposed to provide sustained release of caffeine over several hours (rather than in one quick burst) making it a more subtle pick-me-up* A versatile product that can be used to make hot or iced tea, or whisked into juices, smoothies, lattes, cereal, yoghurt, soup, salad, rice, pasta, pulses and desserts; however, the subtle and delicate flavour of highest quality ("ceremonial grade") matcha tea like this is intended for tea drinking and can get lost if served in other ways (for which cheaper varieties of matcha tea are recommended).* There are purported health benefits of taking matcha tea (something to do with anti-oxidants)* Long shelf-life (one year, according to the 'best before' date on the base of the jar)* Comes in a dinky little dark brown glass jar with screw on black plastic lid to keep the tea fresh* Comes with a little measuring spatula stuck on the side (remove carefully so as not to rip the label)* Contains approximately one month's supply (30g, 30 x 1g servings – 4 measures of the supplied spatula is 1 serving)* Although expensive, its price is comparable to other matcha tea products on the market=== NIGGLES ===* To the highest quality (organic Japanese ceremonial grade matcha) tea powder, Bloom adds a high proportion of other stuff, the quality of which is not specified: for example, Tropical Matcha contains 10% “Natural Mango Flavouring”, Sunrise Matcha contains 10% “Natural Grapefruit Flavouring”, Supercharge Matcha 25% other stuff (10% maca root and 5% guarana) and Mojito Matcha contains 30% other stuff (20% “peppermint”, but is that peppermint leaves? peppermint oil? is it organic? and 10% “Natural Lime Flavouring”). Nowhere is there any detail of what these “natural flavourings” consist of. To me it seems odd to adulterate a high quality organic health supplement with poorly-specified other stuff* Although the jar says 'Organic Matcha Green Tea from Japan', there is no organic certification on the jar* Given the tiny recommended daily dose, some of the health claims seem laughable: if you're taking the recommended 1g a day (with a maximum recommended dose of 2-3g), the fact the product is "naturally low in fat, salt and sugars and high in fibre and protein" is irrelevant.* Contains caffeine (30mg per 1g serving), so be cautious if sensitive to caffeineFor sale at the time of writing this review at £11.88 (RRP £16.98).

Excellent
Matcha tea was relatively new to me until recently but I've been drinking it for a few weeks now and have become quite a fan.Though it can be mixed with other foods, I prefer to drink it as tea, half a teaspoonful mixed with 100ml of hot but not boiling water, and then adding a little cooler water and frothing it with a battery-operated milk frother. It smells a bit like grass but tastes like a mild green tea only smoother.I found it perfectly pleasant at first though not something I would rush home to drink, however within a week I have found I genuinely enjoy the flavour and look forward to my cup each morning. This particular variety contains Guarana which is widely known to increase energy levels and Maca root which I'd not previously heard of.It's hard to know whether I feel more energised from the tea itself, or from these added ingredients or if it's all in my mind, but either way, I have been sufficiently convinced by the research I've read to continue drinking it and can highly recommend this range from Bloom.

A healthy alternative.
Matcha tea seems to be the in super food at the moment as it has many health benefits including, energy boosting, an antioxidant, brain power, healthy immune system. It is grown the same and is the same as normal green tea except that to call it Matcha and increase the benifits it is covered and grown in the shade. It tastes just like green tea only stronger, the difference being is that this is ground into a very fine powder so you only need a very small amount. To make it you have to whisk it until it has a frothy top this is done with a bamboo whisk. I tried it with a small metal whisk but it is just not the same, a bamboo whisk is definitely much better. It can also be used in almost all cooking, soups, sauces, cakes, ice cream. or just sprinkle onto your food, it is very versatile. In Japan you can buy cakes,Matcha latte, chocolate and Matcha sweets, without all the sugar of course much less sweet than our products.

Good quality matcha tea with energy boosting additions (allegedly)
I used to drink matcha tea as part of my daily routine so I have the bamboo whisk, which may seem like overkill but is very effective at mixing and frothing this vibrant green tea.I've now had the chance to sample more than one of the Bloom brand match teas and I'm happy with all of them. Green tea does contain anti-oxidants, so it may well be worth acquiring the taste for your health. I have no idea whether guarana or maca root will have a super charge effect but I'm happy to give it a go. After drinking mainly rooibos tea for years now it's been giving me a caffeine boost for sure. This is a quality matcha tea and I don't notice any real change in taste between this and the standard ceremonial grade so I'm happy to take a chance I'll be increasing my energy levels

BLOOM Supercharge Matcha (30g)
I became interested in Matcha after watching the TV programme, "The Truth About Superfoods". I have been drinking green tea for many years and I wanted to try Matcha. I have green tea teabags with matcha and that is quite drinkable. This green tea is an acquired taste, drinking it straight as a tea may not be for everyone but adding to smoothies is definitely worth a try. Matcha is an expensive product, due to the intensive harvesting and process by which they create the powder. This pot is good value and will last, the spatula provided is helpful. I am sold on the health benefits of Matcha, I try to get as many antioxidant sources into my diet as possible.
