Q: Has anyone tried to work a celing light and fan to see if it works

I have used the varilight dimmer switches using remote control for the last 10 year and found it to be perfect,although I have replaced the remote switch once as the original was worn out.

Q: Is the switch radio frequency or infra-red? I need one which works through walls. Thanks.

They are infra red, they do have a good range though as I can operate it in the bedroom about 3-4m away just lifting it pointing it at a painted wall with the door ajar that also blocks the line of sight. For the living room through an archway to the dining room you can use it to operate the lights anywhere in either room without being line of sight too. But it will not go through walls.

Q: what is the maximum sideways angle that the remote will work, or does it need to point directly onto the master switch?

The remote requires line of sight to operate correctly, so does need to be pointed directly at the master dimmer.

Q: OK! so I buy this remote controller, what other kit do I need to make the whole thing work?

this should work straight away with the dimmer switch. I have to press either button 1 or button 8 twice before it turns on/off the lights
