Gorgeous, lyrical writing--I'm hooked
I knew very little about fly fishing before reading this book, but this absorbing set of true-life stories has me itching to wade out and cast a line. Tomine's descriptions of his time in pristine, beautiful places (lucky guy!) gave me renewed appreciation for this incredible planet we call home. Beyond that, Tomine unpacks his soul on these pages, and it's fascinating to see the progress of this particular pilgrim through life—fish by fish, river by river.

Could have been more engaging
There are some good stories that are well written. But the book gets a little one note (what, another steelhead story?) and sometimes preachy. The best fishing authors make you want to go all with them on their next trip. However this author seems like a bit of a jerk, certainly no one I'd like to hang out with. This is unfortunate since the writer could have chosen an improved literary persona, one that would drawn the readers into the tales .

Headwaters so much more then a great fishing book.
Love these stories! While Headwaters is a great fishing book, full of adventure and fun, it’s really more about people and how we relate to each other and to the planet. Rare to find so much emotional content in a book of fishing stories. Highly recommend.

Seller ships in thin plastic wrap - results in bent corners
Otherwise beautiful hardcover book marred by damage to corners during shipment. Seller does not package books in protective cardboard.

For every fly fisher
As a lifelong fly fisherman, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the places the author fished that I can only dream about. Well written, described and reported. Totally authentic and believable.

Superb
Headwaters is the best collection of contemporary fly fishing pieces I’ve read. Hands down. It’s that simple. The fish/adventure stories reminded me over and over of some of my own, and shone out a love of that life that will be immediately familiar to anyone who feels a little more alive in the outdoors. The conservation essays contain some seriously bad news; but each is also a story of paths forward and through, of profound commitment to the preservation of wild fish, rivers, and places, and of awe-inspiring natural phenomena that consistently defy the man-made world’s most devastating harms. Tomine’s voice is as down-to-earth as nature writing gets, and yet passionately lyrical. If you’re into fly fishing writing but sick of the outdated paradigm of wealthy old men treating rivers like endlessly exploitable living golf courses while wearing, smoking, sipping, eating, driving, casting, and buying some of the most expensive goods available to them; then yes, this book is for you. If you’re ready to read about how working to preserve the rivers you love, for those you love, can be as blessed as fishing those rivers, then this book is for you. Pick it up, read it slow, and let it remind you of the real glory that’s out there- in your favorite people, in small beautiful moments, in big wild adventures, and the waters that are the common thread.
