I’m quite pleased with the product and the process ...
For months, I researched futons (for our guest room that’s being converted to my getaway) until making myself CRAZY! I ultimately selected this item because of the reputable brand and the price. I also wanted arms, a walnut finish and dark mattress. The futon arrived ahead of schedule and was carefully wrapped in three packages. Instructions, both written and the video, were straightforward and appreciated. Those accustomed to putting things together will not have problems with assembly. As mentioned in other reviews, the wood is lovely, although more gray than brown which is just fine by me. Also, the [navy color] description is misleading, as this is more akin to a peacock blue (which I like). My friend (who is quite handy) and I easily put this together, and I find it amazing that some reviewers reported going solo. Not due to difficulty, but because of needing to balance heavy pieces, etc. While assembling, we noticed the left arm was damaged. I called the folks in MN, and we had a replacement in three days. Slight inconvenience, yet good customer service/recovery.The four-star rating is only because we haven’t used it for sleeping yet. However, the futon is quite sturdy and comfortable when sitting/lying on it.I was a bit reluctant to buy something like this without “kicking the tires” so to speak, and I relied heavily on the hundreds of comments I reviewed. The overall process went well, and I’m pleased with the result.

Sturdy and nice looking
I am a 54 year old 115 pound grandma and managed to assemble this futon by myself. For sure it would have been quicker and easier with a second person, but I managed and it wasn’t too bad. It’s comfortable and seems to be really sturdy. It looks nice and I am happy with my purchase. I would buy again.

Very nice, inexpensive futon
Great futon, I looked at several and for the quality and being made of solid wood this is the best deal by far. It’s very nice looking and the mattress and a very comfortable. It is a little hard to move back into the seat position but after looking at the website and their instructions on how to properly do it I have had no issues. The cover is soft and looks great. Easy to clean and vacuums easily. The wood color is beautiful with a slight grey tint. Assembly wasn’t too bad. My 12 year old son and I put it together on about an hour and a half. I would highly recommend this futon.

The color of the wood was wrong. The rest is good.
The wood is gray. It is gray. It is not Java or brown. Many people have mentioned this. So if you are looking for some color match for decor--beware.The comfort is great! I have the leather Futon. The frame is sturdy. It was easy to assemble. I suggest watching the videos. I suggest paying attention to times / places where you should not tighten things--that's so you can fit things later.I suggest having a screw driver handy to hold some specialized pieces in place that are threaded cylinders with a screw driver head, to insure you mate the bolt with this piece easily. It will just make it easier. It's sturdy when finished, comfortable, decorative. I would have preferred the brown/java colored frame but gray it is but I could live with that so I didn't mind. I got a good price on this for reasons unknown but maybe they figured out they had lots of units with an off painted color...I'd recommend this Kodiak brand over other Futon manufactures. I've owned a few wood framed Futons over the past 40 years and this is the strongest I've had.

Solid and comfortable
It would have been 5 stars but the one flaw I've found is getting it upright into couch mode is more difficult than it should be if you're doing it by yourself. Largely because the mattress itself doesn't want to fold up easily. The first dozen times I actually had to pull it most of the way off, which is bothersome as the mattress isn't that light. It's getting better over time as the mattress is getting more worn into the sitting position. I'd recommend that anytime it's not being used to sleep on put it in sitting position to get the mattress time to remain in that position and make it easier to fold up next time.Assembly was a little more hectic than expected, at the end parts even with two people. You've got to be pretty steady holding up the frame pieces. Some advice, definitely take your time at tightening up the screws a little way and going back around and doing it repeatedly rather than try to tighten them in one at a time in one or two goes. Also if you can't get a second person to help, be prepared to find something, or several somethings, to prop up the frame while putting it together.

Don't sit on mattress if you want to use it as a bed
This futon is the nicest futon I have ever slept on. It was very easy to assemble... we didn't find the directions until after it was put together, so it truly is self-explanatory. It's beautiful and the mattress is much more comfortable than other mattresses I have slept on. However, I have been sitting in the same spot on the mattress for less than a month, and when I pull the futon out to sleep on it, the mattress dips where I sit, and I am not a large woman. Therefore, I do not recommend sitting on it for any length of time if you are going to use it as a bed as sitting apparently leads to an uneven mattress. Others have mentioned the difficulty in taking it from the sleeping position to the sitting position, and after watching the video, I am able to do it by myself every time, and it is very easy, so be sure to watch it if you are having difficulty with that.
